Establishing a Biblical Theology of Discipleship

We need to begin our study of discipleship by defining “disciple” because it's the only discipleship term used in Scripture.

The Bible does not use the terms discipleship nor discipling. They are English words derived from disciple. We will see later in our study that discipleship is the ongoing process of a disciple and discipling refers to the work of disciples helping one another in the discipleship process.

Therefore, if we want to understand discipleship and discipling (what is it and who is responsible for it), we must first understand what a disciple is. That is what we aim to do here, talking about the following points.

  • The Book of Acts: Our source for defining disciple
  • Defining Terms: Disciple, Discipleship, Discipling
  • Discipleship in the Epistles
  • How does one become a disciple?
  • Common Misconceptions Regarding Discipleship
  • Discipleship: A Simple Concept in Summary
  • Conclusion: Discipleship is the “normal Christian life.”
